The three earthquakes that have hit Wales in the last 50 days

Wales has been struck by three earthquakes in the last 50 days, according to the British Geological Survey.

You may not have felt any of them, as they were all very minor, but they happened nonetheless. The most recent occurred on October 22 in Caernarfon Bay. At a depth of eight kilometres, it measured 0.6 on the Richter scale.

The other two occurred in Llanwnog, Powys, and Llanafan, Ceredigion, earlier in the month.

They were rated at a magnitude of 0.3 and 0.9 respectively. Most earthquakes under magnitude 2.5 or less are not felt, though they can be recorded by a seismograph.

Quakes of such low magnitude are the most frequent, with an estimated 900,000 occurring each year.

In February 2018, Wales recorded its strongest earthquake in over a decade. It was rated at a magnitude of 4.4 at its epicentre in the village of Cwmllynfell in  Neath Port Talbot , 20km north-east of  Swansea . Two aftershocks were also officially recorded. You can see more earthquakes that have been recorded in Wales since then .

Why do we get earthquakes in Britain?

According to the British Geological Survey, earthquakes in Britain are a result of the many faults located beneath us.

"Some of these faults can be observed at the surface and mapped by geologists, others are hidden many kilometres below the surface. These faults are places where earthquakes can occur," the group said.

"The driving forces for earthquake activity in the UK are unclear; however they include regional compression caused by motion of the Earth’s tectonic plates, and uplift resulting from the melting of the ice sheets that covered many parts of Britain thousands of years ago."
