Sheridan Smith fans have spotted a major plot hole in her new Channel 5 drama, The Teacher.
The thrilling drama sees the 40-year-old actress play Jenna Garvey - a popular teacher with a chaotic private life who is accused of sleeping with young pupil, Kyle, after a night out.
Following the accusation, the terrified teacher begins to reassess her life choices and starts her mission to prove her innocence in the drama.
While viewers have been loving the gripping new series, some eagle-eyed fans of the Channel 5 show have spotted a huge plot hole in the story - with some dubbing it 'unrealistic'.
Naturally, thousands of school teachers have tuned into the series to watch the all-too-familiar plot unfold, but they haven't been left convinced and instead have slated it as being 'silly'.
Taking to Twitter, they share their reactions.
"The Teacher is just downright silly. I'm a teacher myself and this series of events would NEVER happen in real life. I was so looking forward to this show but I'm really not a fan," one complained.
"Sheridan Smith is amazing but this is all too unrealistic," another echoed.
"I work in a school myself and all that's happening in The Teacher wouldn't really happen in real life. She would never get access to that CCTV footage when she's bloody on trial for being a child sex offender," someone else pointed out.
Meanwhile, a fourth complained: "The Teacher has so many silly plot holes!!!!! I can't deal."
Speaking about her part in the show, Sheridan herself has explained that she was attracted to the series due to Jenna’s complexed character.
She told What To Watch: "We'd all been in lockdown, I'd had my son [Billy, born in May 2020] and I'd been reading lots of different scripts — then this one came along and I was gripped. Jenna is such a complex character, there are so many layers to her, and I love the fact that you don't know if she's telling the truth or not.
“All these twists and turns came along in the story that I did not expect, and I couldn't put it down, which is rare — I read it all in one go."
She went on to explain she hopes the show will provoke a discussion among viewers.
She said: "Hopefully there will be lots of people not knowing if they trust me as Jenna — there are bits where it looks like I could be quite sinister.
“I hope there are a lot of conversations about whether or not she is guilty, especially as all the twists and turns come out, it gets so complicated and dark. I just can't wait for the audience to see it — when I first read it I was gripped, and I hope they feel the same and come on the journey with us."
