The Teacher on Channel 5: What it's about, cast and where you've seen them before

Sheridan Smith will lead the cast of Channel 5's latest drama.

The Teacher begins on Monday night (January 31) and follows English teacher, Jenna Garvey.

Jenna, played by Sheridan, is accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a student, 15-year-old Kyle, who claims the pair had a sexual encounter.

The full Channel 5 synopsis reads: "Jenna Garvey, an emotionally troubled teacher with a chaotic private life seeks to numb her pain with alcohol and promiscuity, leading her to be accused of sleeping with a student.

"With no memory of the night in question, Jenna’s only hope of redemption lies in uncovering the truth about a dark event in her past that returns to haunt her."

The first episode of The Teacher will begin on Channel 5 on January 31, 2022, at 9pm and the series then airs over consecutive nights for the rest of the week.

Sheridan leads the cast as Jenna (SCU)

Sheridan leads the cast with the actress is known for her countless roles both on stage and screen.

The 40-year-old star is probably most recognised for early roles in Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, Gavin & Stacey, Benidorm, and Jonathan Creek before receiving critical acclaim for her roles in the TV dramas Mrs Biggs, Cilla, The C Word, Black Work, and The Moorside.

And there are plenty more familiar faces in the cast.

Playing Kyle is Samuel Bottomley.

The actor is best know for playing Brandon Kelleher in the CBBC series Rocket's Island and Jordan Wilson on the Channel 4's Ackley Bridge.

More recently he portrayed the role of Dean Paxton in the film adaptation of hit show, Everybody's Talking About Jamie.

Former Emmerdale star Kelvin Fletcher (SCU)

Kelvin Fletcher will also be making an appearance as Jack, a teacher at the same school as Jenna.

Many viewers will recognise the Oldham-bromn actor for his role as Andy Sugden in Emmerdale.

He played the ITV soap role from 1996 until 2016 and in 2019, Fletcher won the Strictly Come Dancing with his professional partner, and now Dancing On Ice judge, Oti Mabuse.

As well as starring in the brand new drama, Kelvin is also appearing in his BBC One own show, Kelvin's Big Farming Adventure, with his wife and children.

Sharon Rooney and Cecilia Noble in The Teacher (SCU)

Cecilia Noble plays Pauline, another of Jenna's colleagues.

The actress has appeared in a string of shows including The Bill, Silent Witness, Steve McQueen's Small Axe, and BBC drama Undercover.

Sharon Rooney is another familiar face joining The Teacher cast as Nina.

The actress is probably best known for playing Rae in Channel 4 sitcom My Mad Fat Diary.

She more recently starred in ITV's comedy-drama Finding Alice.

Also in the cast are CBBC's Almost Never star, Tillie Amartey, Heartbeat and Coronation Street's David Fleeshman, Coronation Street actress Karen Henthorn, and Sarah-Jane Potts, who has starred in Channel 4's Sugar Rush, Casualty and Waterloo Road.

Completing the acting line-up is Ian Puleston-Davies as Brian, Karen Bryson plays Ava, Anil Desai as Ken, Yemisi Oyinloye plays Denise, and Reuben Johnson as Sean.
