The surprising items that are forcing costs to 'shoot up' for local bakery

Every Saturday and Sunday morning you will see a queue form outside a lovely little business in Terenure.

Locals line-up outside The Corner Bakery eagerly awaiting fresh warm bread, delicious pastries and their very special waffles that always sell out. This business is at the heart of the Terenure community, but just like everyone else in the country, they too are being hit by shocking price increases on energy and supplies.

Cara Lloyd, owner of The Corner Bakery, told Dublin Live that she has noticed a huge difference in the cost of running her business. And it's not just electricity bills.

"It's not just energy prices. The ingredient prices have been creeping up week by week. Things you might not think of like paper bags and boxes that we put the cakes into," she said.

"It's not just the energy prices, paper bags have more than doubled."

Not only are the costs hitting the local bakery, but it is now harder to get good quality supplies.

"The quality from suppliers isn't what it used to be either. Some suppliers are having trouble post Brexit. We can't get the same products that we got before at the same price. Things are shooting up for us."

Cara says that moving forward the bakery may have to cut back the range of products on offer to help tackle the challenges of increasing prices. She said: "We are looking at cutting back the range a little just to simplify, to cut costs."

This morning on The Ryan Tubridy Show, a listener text in to say their local bakery was closing down. Dee wrote in saying: "Our local bakery is closing down. The current economic climate meant it was hard to compete. They tried everything. Tell everyone to try as much as they can to buy in their independent shops."

Ryan expressed his concern that chain bakeries will take over, saying: "I don't like local stuff like that closing down at all. They'll bring in some horrible chain. Chain bakeries - no! Not for me anyway."

"Local bakeries are fresher, tastier, more soul in them."
