The surprise player in action for Tottenham U21s as wish under Jose Mourinho is fulfilled

There was a familiar face in a Tottenham shirt when an Under-21s side took on Enfield Town in a pre-season friendly on Tuesday. The youngsters were 3-1 down just after the hour mark and Nile John's 67th minute goal could only help his side end the game 3-2.

The unlikely player in amongst the starting XI for Spurs was Danny Rose. The 32-year-old played just over an hour for the young side, before being replaced with John.

In the last week or so, reports have revealed that the former Tottenham man has been training at Hotspur Way, despite still being under contract with Watford. Rose made just eight Premier League appearances for The Hornets last season and hasn't featured for them since the end of December.

The defender had a difficult end to his Spurs chapter, some of which was displayed in Tottenham's All or Nothing Amazon Documentary, where he had a very honest conversation with Jose Mourinho. During the chat, Rose made his feelings very clear.

"I was very excited when you came as manager, but if you don’t want me to play, I’d rather you just tell me now, and I’ll stay at home, and I’ll train at home," he admitted. At the end of 2020, Rose opened up on his hopes for the future.

"I want nothing more than to play in front of the Tottenham fans one more time, just to cherish all the moments we have had over the years with them," he explained.

"They have always been good to me, I have possibly given them reasons in the past not to be so good to me, but they know when it was game time I gave everything for them. I would love nothing more than to play one last time for Tottenham and just be able to say goodbye to them and thank them for everything they have done for me as a person as a player."

Although it may not have been the type of match or as many fans as Rose would've wanted, his appearance for the Under-21s is likely to have still been a good moment for him, just to be playing football again. It somewhat fulfilled the request he made almost two years ago, when Mourinho was still in charge and he seemed to get a warm welcome from Spurs fans.

The 32-year-old failed to get a move in January and still has a year left on his contract, with the now Championship side. The defender still has a good few years left of his football career and he is likely to want to make the move somewhere this summer, where he can get back to playing regular football again.
