The surnames in Scotland that are worth up to £227,000 in unclaimed estates

A number of Scottish families may be due a fortune in unclaimed estates from their relatives.

Hundreds of thousands of pounds in unclaimed inheritance could be waiting for some people, who may not even be aware that they are owed money. Records on unclaimedestates.scot reveal there were 34 unclaimed estates last year where the deceased was domiciled in Scotland.

When an individual passes away before making a will, they leave behind all of their possessions. This includes money, property, businesses, and vehicles.

If nobody claims the belongings, then they could be passed over to the government's accounts. Read on for a list of all 34 estates, broken down by council area.

Who is entitled to collect an unclaimed estate?

If a person dies without leaving a will, the following people are entitled to claim the estate:

  • Husband, wife, or civil partner
  • Children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and so on
  • Mother or father
  • Brothers or sisters who share both the same mother and father, or their children (nieces and nephews)
  • Half brothers or sisters or their children
  • Uncles and aunts or their children (first cousins or their descendants)
