'The support has been amazing' - Lanarkshire shop staff appeal for volunteers as they collect for Ukraine

Volunteers at a Lanarkshire charity shop have appealed for extra help as they try to assist Ukrainians fleeing the ongoing conflict in their homeland.

Rain or Shine South Lanarkshire, based in Rutherglen, are collecting a wide range of items that will go towards refugees who have left their homeland since Russia invaded.

The items, which include medical supplies and long lasting food and baby supplies, are then being taken to the Nurture Centre in Cambuslang, before going towards convoys bound for the Ukraine and Poland border.

Many Ukrainians have fled into Poland since Russia launched its invasion one week ago.

However, Rain or Shine's boss Paula McNee is also looking for extra volunteers, particularly people who could help the transport the goods from their shop.

She told Lanarkshire Live: "We have a friend who’s family are currently hiding in Ukraine, and one of their homes was bombed yesterday. It’s been devastating for her.

"We are working directly with Ukraine and Polish people to try and get essential items out to Poland, the border and then into Ukraine.

"However at the moment we are finding it very hard with transport as the car used for the shop is currently sitting off the road due to major repairs.

"The garage it’s sitting at doesn’t have the expertise to fix it and we can’t afford to buy a new one and the repairs are very expensive.

"So if anyone can help transport items that would be great, helping to take things to and from the shop to the church. We are looking for volunteers to help us at the Nurture and at the shop, just to pack boxes and sort donations.

"At the moment we need donations of medical supplies. We don't need clothing, what's urgently needed is medicine, first aid, food and baby supplies are going first."

"There are lots of issues to sort but we’ve had so many amazing donations from local people. The support has been amazing."

Anyone wanting to help out can contact Paula at Rain or Shine's shop on Stonelaw Road or via social media such as their Facebook page.
