The Super Bowl should be on Saturday night, duh

Editor’s note: This story was originally published in 2021 as part of The Morning Win newsletter. However, the point still stands.

One of the things I have never worried about is being afraid to repeat myself over and over again when I think I’m right about a subject, for better or worse.

So here I go again — the Super Bowl should be held on Saturday night from now until the end of time.

Man, it feels good to say that again. I said it two years ago, I said it a year ago, and I’m gonna say it year after year until this big football game is no longer played on a school night for most people.

Let me go over the reasons why I continue to think it’s dumb that the Super Bowl is on a Sunday night instead of a Saturday night.

1. Monday mornings after the Super Bowl stink.

Chances are you like to have fun while watching the Super Bowl and sometimes maybe you have too much fun, which results in a rough start to the work week on Monday morning. There really is no reason for this to be a thing anymore. Push the game back to Saturday night, enjoy a guilt-free time of watching the game, recover on Sunday, go to work on Monday feeling like a million bucks. Boom.

2. Tradition is gone, thankfully.

“But Sunday is football day!”

Yeah, that was true back in like 1982 but it is far from true now, especially this year. Heck, we’ve seen a regular season game on a Wednesday, and everyone watched it. The NFL has regularly scheduled games on Sundays, Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and we’ve had Wednesday games and some Tuesday games. Football can be played on any day of the week. Shocking, right?!

3. People will watch it even if it’s on a Saturday night.

Every time I write this take some people will actually say stuff like, “Nobody watches TV on a Saturday night.” Think about that for a second. Some adults out there actually think that nobody would watch the Super Bowl on a Saturday night because they don’t normally watch TV on a Saturday night. Excuse me but… IT’S THE SUPER BOWL. As I’ve said before, you could play this thing on a Tuesday morning, and it would be watched by everyone.

4. People overseas hate the Sunday night game.

I started getting behind this cause after a buddy of mine who is the Army and is stationed in Italy told me that the Super Bowl starts at like 3 a.m. on Monday morning and that he hates starting week off like that. It leads to a horrible day at work/life, which is something that could easily be avoided. There are lots of football fans all over the globe who have to watch this game at a ridiculous time and it makes absolutely no sense when it all can be fixed by pushing it back a day.

5. We don’t need Monday to be called a national holiday.

Lots of people tell me that they should just make Monday after the Super Bowl a national holiday so everyone will have the day off. That’s great in theory until you think about all those people that I mentioned in No. 4 above and realize they likely couldn’t used the national holiday excuse to get out of work on Monday. Think about others, people!

6. It just make sense.

Admit it – it really does just make sense, doesn’t it? Yes, yes it does. Super Bowl Saturday, let’s do it! (Next year!)
