The stunning Scottish lochside town named among UK's most romantic places

The six top "most romantic staycation" destinations in the UK have been named, including one western Scottish Highlands town.

With the cost of living crisis continuing, more and more couples are opting for a romantic getaway closer to home. According to holidaycottages.co.uk, searches for 'best places for staycation UK' has risen by 70 per cent over the past week.

As Valentine's Day continues to inch closer, experts at the holiday letting agency have shared six of the best romantic destinations across the nation where couples can create cherished memories.

Among those included is Fort William on the shores of Loch Linnhe. Known as the outdoor capital of the UK, holidaycottages.co.uk described the town as "perfect for outdoorsy couples who love exploring".

There is plenty to see and do in and around Fort William for couples this Valentine's Day, from lush beaches and magnificent mountains to historic castles and museums. The nearby Ben Nevis Distillery, which is one of the oldest licensed distilleries in the country, is also the perfect spot for a whisky tasting.

The highlight of the area is undoubtedly its countless walking and hiking routes, however. Couples who live for the great outdoors will no doubt love exploring Ben Nevis and Glencoe.

"The town is described as the ‘outdoor capital of the UK’, which makes it a great Valentine’s staycation for couples who love being outside! You won’t run out of things to do either as it is home to cinematic landscapes such as Glencoe, and attractions such as Lochaber Geopark and the Jacobite Steam Train."

Meanwhile, Portmeirion in Wales was named the top staycation spot in the UK. The experts at holidaycottages.co.uk stated that it is "perfect for couples who want a taste of the Mediterranean", and praised the tourist village's "quirky and colourful" architecture and gardens.
