Steven Gerrard's transition to Leeds United would be eased by a key connection he made while at Rangers.
That is the view Ibrox hero Barry Ferguson who says the former Light Blues boss would be a 'good presence' at Elland Road following the departure of energetic coach Jesse Marsch. The American was given his marching orders last week with the likes of Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou touted in some quarters while out of work Gerrard could look for an avenue back in to the coveted Premier League.
It was a failed experiment at Aston Villa for the Liverpool icon after ditching Rangers following a three-and-a-half-year spell at Ibrox. Gerrard lasted around a year in post in the Midlands but was aided by Gary McAllister as his right-hand man after a successful partnership in Glasgow.
And Ferguson believes, as first mentioned by fellow pundit Mark Guidi, that former Leeds hero McAllister's connection could allow a path for Gerrard to stand out amongst the candidates.
He told Go Radio: "I have no doubt he is a very good manager, Steven Gerrard. He's just had a tough time and it just never worked out in the end at Aston Villa. I hope he gets another opportunity. It was Mark (Guidi) who called it first about Steven Gerrard for Leeds because of the Gary McAllister connection and I don't think it would be the worst appointment ever.
"He has a good presence about him. With him being up in Scotland listening to what he was doing inside the club the way he came across in the press I was really impressed. I really hope he gets another opportunity because he done some real good things at Rangers.
"It was just disappointing the way it ended at Aston Villa but that's football. It wouldn't be the worst appointment for Leeds."
