The Sir Alex Ferguson Aberdeen record Jimmy Thelin’s side are closing in on

Aberdeen will equal their all-time unbeaten record if they avoid defeat in their next three games and match a milestone set by Alex Ferguson 41 years ago.

The Dons battled back to grab a point against Celtic at Parkhead in a top-of-the-table clash at the weekend which ended their winning run of 13 games in a row under new manager Jimmy Thelin.

However, it extended their unbeaten run to 24 games in all competitions which started last season with a 1-0 win over Motherwell in March.

Aberdeen's all-time unbeaten record was set in season 1983/84 where they went 27 games without defeat.

Fergie's side, who were European Cup Winners' Cup holders, lost to Hibs in October in a 2-1 setback.

They then went unbeaten for the next six months until a 2-0 loss in Hungary to Ujpest Dosza in the quarter-finals in the defence of their trophy.

They went on to win the Premier League by seven points from Celtic when it was two points for a win and also beat the Hoops in the Scottish Cup Final after extra time.

Aberdeen would need to avoid defeat against Dundee United and Rangers at Pittodrie and would match the record at Hampden if they emerged unscathed from their Premier Sports Cup semi-final against Celtic.
