The Simpsons pays tribute to Derry Girls as show creator left stunned by reference

The Simpsons has paid tribute to Derry Girls with a subtle nod to the Channel 4 series ahead of it's final season later this year.

The long-running American animated show has given plenty of time to Irish people and traditions in the past - even going so far as to set an episode on the Emerald Isle back in 2009.

In that episode, we see the famous family head to Ireland via plane, with the airline Derry Air.

But now they've gone one further by giving a shout out to the sitcom last Sunday evening's episode.

During the episode, Homer takes the family to an ice-cream parlour, but leaves the family dog Santa's Little Helper inside.

The name of that ice-cream parlour? Dairy Girls.

Producer Matt Selman confirmed the nod, telling Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee that "it was the least we could do".

On St Patrick's Day, we got our first look at the third and final season of the Channel 4 hit show.

Saoirse-Monica Jackson (Erin), Nicola Coughlan (Clare), Jamie-Lee O'Donnell (Michelle), Louisa Harland (Orla) and Dylan Llewellyn (James) are all set to reprise their roles when it comes to our screens later this year.

The show has been an enormous success since it first hit our screens in 2018.

Set in the Ulster city during the 1990s, we see the antics of four friends from Derry (and a wee English fella) as they deal with the many issues facing teens during the period in the north.

In the trailer, there are meltdowns and even a mention of oppressive breathing, as the group try and navigate their final year of school as well as their busy - and sometimes turbulent - home lives.

The show, written by McGee, has been praised for both it's humour and the handling of the complicated history of Derry.
