Consumer experts have said that thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) could save households money on their energy bill.
A TRV detects a room’s temperature and opens or closes the valve of the radiator as appropriate.
This will make sure that you aren't wasting your heating, with each room of your house only as warm as you need it to be
According to charity group Nesta, making the switch to a TRV could save individual households 5.5 per cent, or £68, on a typical annual gas bill.
The experts at Which? suggest using setting two for less occupied rooms and three for rooms you’re often using to try and cut heating use, knowing that you can go higher if you’re feeling cold.
Trade Radiators explain that setting two would see a room heated to 15°C while setting three would warm a room up to 20°C.
Popular retailers such as Screwfix sell single thermostatic radiator valves for £10 or less, although some smart models that use WiFi can cost up to £60.
Other ways to cut down your energy bill, according to the experts at Which?, include:
- Adjust your combi boiler’s flow temperature to 50-70°C
- Turn your thermostat as low as 18°C if you are healthy
- Look into insulating your home and boiler if it isn’t already
- Use electric heaters sparingly
This comes after energy costs jumped up earlier this month, with an average household's bill rising from £1,971 to £2,500 in October.
As a result, some households will be looking for ways to save money without having to sacrifice their heating through the winter.
Emily Seymour, Which? Energy Editor, said: "Huge energy bills this winter are a cause of real concern for millions of households across the country, especially when many are already feeling the pressures of the cost of living crisis."
She added that people should check if they are eligible for support through grant schemes or other financial assistance.
For example, the Warm Home Discount is available to pensioners as well as those who get certain benefits and is increasing from £140 to £150 this month.
Those born before 26 September 1955 can also claim Winter Fuel Payment of between £100 and £300 per winter.
