The Scottish towns where people are most likely to cheat on their partners

A South Lanarkshire town near Glasgow has been named as the new "cheating capital" of the country in a new study.

Cambuslang was found to have the highest amount of people having affairs, Illicit Encounters has found.

A "cheating map", named the Infidelity Index, has been created for people to check out the place where they live and see how many people are being unfaithful to their partners.

According to the data, there are 1,064 people in Cambuslang having an affair - a big rise on last year's figure of 465.

That amounts to 4.84% of the town's population, the highest proportion in the whole of Scotland.

The map allows you to see the number of cheaters in your area (Illicit Encounters)

Cambuslang is located south of the River Clyde, about six miles from Glasgow. Some famous people from Cambuslang include 80s legend and Ultravox singer Midge Ure, and Brendan O'Hare from Teenage Fanclub.

In second place was Motherwell (1,161 cheats - 3.56% of the population), third was Kirkintilloch (585 cheats - 3.41% of the population), fourth was Rutherglen (867 cheats - 3.37% of the population) and fifth was Falkirk (959 cheats - 3.30% of the population).

In contrast, Alloa is Scotland's most faithful town with just 35 cheats - just 0.21% of the population.

The interactive Infidelity Index allows users to search a town, city or postcode to discover how many people are having affairs in any locality.

The cheating map from IllicitEncounters.com, Scotland's leading affairs site, is based on data from one million postcodes.

IllicitEncounters.com spokeswoman Jessica Leoni said: "Cambuslang is Scotland's new adultery capital. We have seen a big rise in affairs in South Lanarkshire and throughout most of Scotland over the last year.

"The cost of living crisis has been a huge factor in boosting the numbers of affairs. Sex is one of the few things you can do which is free and is a good way to relieve stress.

"Fewer unhappy couples can afford to divorce because the cost of setting up two new homes is astronomical. Far cheaper to stay in an unhappy relationship and have a discreet affair.

"A second factor has been life finally returning to normal after Covid and cheaters making up for lost time after two years of restrictions.

"The run-up to Christmas is always a boom time for affairs because most people are back in the office and looking for some fun."

The figures are based on IllicitEncounters’ own extensive data on the numbers of Britons cheating. You can find the figure for any location in Scotland here.
