The Scottish castle 'haunted' by a ghostly piper that inspired James Bond

With the weather picking up in recent days, and the Easter holidays upon us, it is time to start thinking about how to make the most of the time off.

From charming towns to hiking trails, Scotland is home to a seemingly endless supply of picturesque and fascinating destinations. If you're in the mood for something a little more spooky this April, though, then you might consider heading to Duntrune Castle.

Situated on the north side of Loch Crinan and across from the village of Crinan in Argyll, the historic castle is believed to be the oldest continuously occupied castle on mainland Scotland. The category B listed building dates back to the 13th century, when it was constructed by the MacDougall clan.

In the 17th century, the castle was attacked by the Clan MacDonald before being taken over by Clan Campbell. Later, in 1792, the clan sold Duntrune to Clan Malcolm, and it is currently owned by current chief of the clan Robin Neill Malcolm.

Since taking ownership of Duntrune, Clan Malcolm have undertaken significant restoration work. While the castle itself remains a private residence, the gardens are open to the public.

As well as being a scenic destination well worth a visit on its own, ghost hunters and James Bond fans will get a little bit extra out of a trip to the historic castle.

Given its many owners of the centuries, it is not exactly surprising that Duntrune is believed to be haunted by a spirit. According to local legend, not only have there been mysterious reports of banging noises and flying objects—but even the sound of bagpipes on occasion.

It is thought that a MacDonald spy was sent to the castle in 1615 to study its defences while working undercover as a piper. However, his identity was eventually discovered by the Campbells and his hands were chopped off—now destined to forever wander the castle's halls to play his mournful song.

A more recent (and less morbid) story about Duntrune Castle involves the 007 film Skyfall. James Bond's childhood home of the same name that is the setting for the movie's explosive climax was modelled after the castle.

The scenes were even supposed to be filmed at the castle itself before the plans were scrapped due to its remote location.

More information about Duntrune Castle can be found on its website.
