The Scottish Borders beach that has been named the 'snowiest in the UK'

With winter well and truly underway, one of Scotland's beaches has been named the 'snowiest in the UK' in new research.

A study by holiday park company Parkdean Resorts has revealed the best UK beaches to visit in winter. Though most associate beaches more with summer, the UK's stunning coastline has a unique wild beauty in winter that makes it perfect for a day out.

When it comes to Scotland, Coldingham Bay is the beach with the highest snowfall across the UK. Coldingham Bay is a sheltered sandy beach located near Eyemouth in the Scottish Borders..

Parkdean Resorts states that the beach has an average of 11.4 snowy days each year. It attracts a high number of travellers throughout the year, and on busy days it can see more than 1000 visitors.

The beach has been awarded the top Marine Conservation Society award for water quality and has attracted bathers for more than a century. There are also a number of amenities such as public toilets, showers, and car parking.

Additionally, there are around 60 beach huts on the north side of the beach, some of which are thought to be approximately 100 years old. These are leased by the Scottish Borders Council.

The top spot for the 'best UK beach in winter' went to Whitley Bay in Northumberland. With 60,500 average online searches each year and up to 7.1 average annual snow days, the company called it "the perfect winter walk location for all the family to enjoy"

Luskentyre Beach, also in Scotland, was found to be the beach with the third highest snowfall in the UK, behind Thornwick Bay in Yorkshire. Luskentyre is found on the west coast of South Harris in the Outer Hebrides, and averages 11.1 snowy days every year.

The beach is famous for its soft white sand and sparkling blue water, making it particularly popular over the summer. However, with majestic snow-capped mountains as a backdrop, it is certainly worth a visit during the colder months too.

To find the 'best' winter beaches in the UK, Parkdean Resorts ranked and averaged the following eight metrics to provide a total ranking:

  • Average yearly search volume for terms relating to each beach

  • Number of annual snow days averaged over a 30 year period

  • The material composition of the beach

  • Whether a lifeguard service is operational or not

  • Average TripAdvisor score for beach

  • Population of local area

  • Number of Hot Chocolate/Cafe Shops located near to the beach. The number is based on locations registered on TripAdvisor and is subject to change.

  • Number of views for social media content relating to each beach
