Netflix show The Sandman is set to be released tomorrow (Friday August 5). Based on the acclaimed comic book series written by Neil Gaiman, the series will run for 10 episodes and features stars including Mark Hamill, Stephen Fry and Jenna Coleman.
The New York Times Bestseller comic book ran for 10 volumes between 1989 and 1996. The TV series will focus on the first volume, Preludes and Nocturnes, and briefly on the second, The Doll’s House.
Set in a dream world, protagonist Dream, played by Tom Sturridge, gives shape to everyone's deepest fears and fantasies. He is unexpectedly captured and held for a century by black magic occultists which has ramifications for the dream world and the real world.
Gaiman has written several dark fantasy novels and characters with a few already reaching the screen. These include Prime Video's American Gods, Good Omens starring David Tennant and Netflix's Lucifer, which is loosely based on a character from The Sandman comic series.
There have been several failed attempts at films and TV adaptations of The Sandman, but the Netflix show is the first to get Gaiman's full approval. The writer also serves as an executive producer on the show.
