A new Hulu docuseries that follows the rise and fall of disgraced family vlogger and convicted child abuser, Ruby Franke, has revealed a bunch of never-before-seen footage and details that lead up to her arrest in August 2023.
Franke pleaded guilty to four counts of aggravated child abuse and was sentenced to four to 30 years behind bars in February 2024, alongside her former business partner and counsellor Jodi Hildebrant.

Friends and family members’ testimonies are heavily featured in the series, including statements from Franke’s ex-husband Kevin Franke as well as their two eldest children Shari and Chad Franke, offering in-depth evidence and archived footage for the first time.
1. Eldest son Chad “truly hated” Ruby Franke
Chad, Ruby’s eldest son of six, stated in the series that he began to resent his mother due to her growing YouTube channel ‘8 Passengers’, and admitted that he “truly hated” Ruby because of it.
“I just wanted to be with my friends,” Chad said.
“I really didn’t want anything to do with YouTube. It bugged the crap out of me. I hated it.
“There was a time, maybe a year or more, where I truly hated her.
“I was being controlled. I purposely said the wrong lines. I purposely tried to make my mum as pissed as I possibly could. I made things hard for her, and I don’t know why.”
Chad also opened up about having to endure sleeping on a beanbag for seven months as a punishment by Ruby, as well as revealing that Ruby was physically abusive towards him.
“She would pull out the belt, pull down my pants, whip me,” he stated in the series.
2. Kevin and Ruby Franke believed Jodi Hildebrant was “chosen by God”.
Hildebrant, a former counsellor, was first introduced to the Franke family as a therapist for Chad, before she began working alongside Ruby as a business partner and launching a YouTube channel together: ‘Moms of Truth’.
Franke soon deleted her social media for ‘8 Passengers’ and solely shifted her focus to her and Hildebrant’s joint venture, with Kevin admitting that he and his estranged wife viewed Hildebrant as being “chosen by God” in the series.
“We genuinely believed that Jodi was inspired, called by God, a representative of God, chosen by God,” Kevin said.
“And this belief all culminated in May 2021. Jodi calls Ruby. She was wailing and sobbing into the phone.
“Apparently, she was being haunted by hooded shadow figures that would just appear surrounding her bed at night. And she said Satan had it out for her. And we believed it.
“We wanted to believe it because we were in a state of mind where we were ready for something big to happen.”

3. Eldest daughter Shari “does think” Ruby Franke and Jodi Hildebrant were romantically involved
The relationship between Franke and Hildebrant was discussed extensively throughout the documentary, culminating in Franke and Hildebrant eventually moving in and sharing a bed together.
“She thought the demons would leave her alone if [Hildebrant] was there,” Kevin said.
Eldest daughter Shari delves a little deeper into her mother’s relationship with Hildebrant, stating that she “does think” the two were lovers.
Kevin expanded on the relationship, describing it as being “much more than a friendship”.
“I don’t know the extent to which their interactions went. It was much more than a friendship. Much more than a sisterhood.
“It was uncomfortably intimate. She immediately started putting her fingers into every aspect of our lives and I think she wanted Ruby to herself, but in order to do that, she needed me out of the picture.”
The series, Devil in the Family: The Fall of Ruby Franke, is currently available for streaming in Australia on Disney+.
