What is the plot of the Rings of Power?

The Rings of Power is set thousands of years before Lord of the Rings (Prime Video)

The Rings of Power is set during the Second Age of Middle-earth. For reference, the events of The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings are set during the very end of the Third Age.

It will no doubt feature the forging of the Rings of Power, and the rise of the dark lord Sauron. It's also expected to feature the fall of the island kingdom of Númenor.

The Rings of Power release date is coming up soon (Prime Video)

According to the series description, it will begin "in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared reemergence of evil returning to Middle-earth.

"From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone."

The Rings of Power cast

Durin IV will be portrayed by Owain Arthur (Prime video)

As the description explains, fans will be meeting new characters, but there will also be some familiar ones. For such a huge production, it's no surprise that the cast list is absolutely gigantic.

But for starters, Saint Maud actress Morfydd Clark will play a young Galadriel.

Meanwhile, Robert Aramayo, who previously played a young Ned Stark in Game of Thrones, will play a young Elrond.

Maxim Baldry, who some may recognise as the kid from Mr Bean's Holiday, will play Isildur, and Durin IV will be portrayed by Owain Arthur.

Simon Merrells will play a character called Trevyn, while Tyroe Muhadifin will play Theo, son of Bonwyn.

Lenny Henry, Megan Richards, and Markella Kavenagh will play harfoots, which are ancestors of hobbits.

Meanwhile, Nazanin Boniadi will play Bronwymn, Ismael Cruz Córdova will play the character Arondir and Charles Edwards will play Celebrimbor.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will air from September 2 on Amazon Prime.
