The Rig season two confirmed as Martin Compston to return in Amazon Prime show

Amazon Prime's The Rig will return for a second series with Martin Compston set to reprise his role as Fulmer Hamilton.

The show, currently available to watch on the streaming service, has been a hit with fans with many having wanted a second series less than 24 hours after the first series was dropped.

Starring Guilt's Mark Bonnar (Alwyn Evans), Game of Throne's Iain Glen (Magnus MacMillan) and Schitt's Creek Emily Hampshire (Rose Mason) - to name a few - the series follows a group of people who are in the dangerous waters of the North Sea off the Scottish coast on the Kinloch Bravo oil rig.

As the rig is hit by massive tremors, the crew endeavour to discover what's driving the "unknown force". However, in the process "bonds are broken, allegiances formed and generational fault lines exposed."

The new series will follow on from all the dramas, with filming of the supernatural series set to begin in Edinburgh later this year.

And in more good news, much of the old cast will also returning alongside the Line of Duty star with Glen, Hampshire, Rochenda Sandall, Owen Teale and Mark Addy joining cast new and old.

Heading into series two, viewers will see the surviving crew of the Kinloch Bravo in a bold new location, where new dangers await them.

The crew will have to deal with the emotional and physical fallout of the epic first series and contend with swirling conspiracies, conflicts, and new threats from the dark depths of the world’s oceans it has unleashed.

The latest series will continue to explore global themes about the past, present, and future of the planet, all while delivering epic thrills and gripping action for its compelling cast of characters.

Dan Grabiner, head of Originals UK & Northern Europe for Prime Video said: “The Rig’s popularity around the world is a testament to the fantastic ensemble cast and the vision of the creators—the crew behind the crew.

"We can’t wait to welcome back Iain, Martin, and Emily, and see what writer and creator David Macpherson has in store for the Kinloch Bravo team next.”

Derek Wax, managing director of Wild Mercury also said: "We were thrilled by the audience response to Series One, and can’t wait to dive back in, continuing the journey of our characters with our hugely talented cast and creative team."

David Macpherson, writer and creator added: "It was always my aim to build a story that starts in Scotland but speaks to a global audience about global themes.

“In Series Two, I'm looking forward to expanding the world of our show through the eyes of our excellent cast, as we deliver more shocks and thrills and delve deeper into both our characters’ and our show's expanding original mythology."
