The restaurant in a hotel added to Michelin Guide just a year after opening

A restaurant in the heart of Cardiff that opened just over a year ago has made it into the Michelin Guide just in time for New Year. The Sorting Room Restaurant in one of Cardiff's newest luxury hotels, The Parkgate Hotel, was added as part of the Michelin Guide's Inspectors' Favourite New Restaraunts list for December alongside a restaurant in Caernarfon - Sheeps and Leeks.

Describing its leisurely lunches as an "elegant experience" and their dinners "an occasion to savour", The Sorting Room aims to be a chic spot to meet up and dine in the city and boasts a wholely British menu with a focus on Welsh produce - think Scotch eggs with Monmouthshire-reared pork, leek and potato soup, Welsh rarebit, Welsh beef, Beef Wellington. risotto and more.

The inspector said: "The Parkgate Hotel is an elegant new addition to the Welsh capital – and the Sorting Room is its smart brasserie, where service comes with a smile. Dishes like pan-roasted chicken breast or beef Wellington are carefully cooked and well-presented."

On the Michelin Guide itself, The Sorting Room's profile reads: "Set within an impressive, modish hotel this elegant, brasserie-style spot boasts leather banquettes, attentive staff and a wide-ranging menu of British dishes. Start with Welsh cold cuts or oak-smoked octopus and crispy pork, followed by Brecon lamb or beef Wellington – and don’t miss the Taffy apple cider tatin, which is big enough for two to share."

And it seems the punters couldn't agree more with this inspector with many on TripAdvisor leaving glowing five star reviews. One wrote: "Had our family Christmas meal in The Sorting Room. Both the festive and the A la Carte menus were awesome, favourites were the scotch egg starter and the Trio of lamb. Staff were knowledgeable and attentive, made it a very special night."

Another said: "We had a beautiful meal of scotch egg to start and steak and fries for main - both of which were delicious. The service was superb and Raven in particular was so attentive and made our evening that much better. Would highly recommend."

The Michelin Guide wrote of it: "You’re greeted by the chefs in the ground floor kitchen as you enter, then taken down to the basement where there are only six tables. Staff bring in produce from their own gardens, and dishes on the set menu are interesting and imaginative."
