The Responder writer speaks out after BAFTA snub

The Responder failed to pick up a single accolade in this year's BAFTA TV Awards - despite an impressive string of nominations.

But the popular BBC One show won its fair share of fans in Liverpool. The thrilling crime drama stars Martin Freeman as troubled cop Chris Carson, who attempts to take down a dangerous Merseyside drug ring, and soon finds himself swept up in a series of dramatic events.

Creator Tony Schumacher said on social media: "So grateful to all who've sent commiserations re the Bafta's tonight. Honestly, I really appreciate it but here's the thing: Fifteen years ago I was homeless and trying to figure out the best way to end it all. Tonight I had a bevy with a bunch of mates. I already won."

Fans turned out to show their support for the gripping series. Barbara Almond said: "Responder was one of the best, honest and thought provoking dramas that I have ever seen. Hearing your story you are an inspiration to those people who want to end their lives and show what you can achieve when you reach rock bottom."

Mary Lloyd Jones said: "Absolutely amazing gripping drama, should have won, you should be so proud of yourself through adversity, you have something special."

The Responder received BAFTA nominations in four categories, including best Drama Series.

Martin Freeman was nominated for the Leading Actor award, which was won by Ben Whishaw for his role in medical drama This is Going to Hurt. Adelayo Adedayo was nominated for the Supporting Actress award, won by Anne-Marie Duff, and Josh Finan was nominated for Supporting Actor, won by Adeel Akhtar.

Anmo Powell said: "Absolutely LOVED The Responder! Was disappointed it didn't win an award at the BAFTAS but it's definitely a winner as far as I'm concerned."

June Rice said: "Amazing drama and acting. Over the years, some of the winners of BAFTAs I have never heard of. Everyone I knew talked about Responder."

Catherine Paterson said: "Brilliant series and deserved BAFTAs, was surprised it didnt get any."
