The Responder writer says season 2 viewers are 'in for a treat'

The writer of hit BBC police drama The Responder has promised viewers are "in for a treat" in season two. The show made its debut in January 2022, starring Martin Freeman as a Liverpool police officer on the edge.

It is due to return for another series later this year. Creator Tony Schumacher posted on Twitter to mark the show's first anniversary.

He told followers he had spent the day watching star Martin Freeman read the script for the first episode of the new run. He joked that he did not want to "torment" fans with the teasing tweet.

The writer - himself a former police officer - wrote: "Happy #TheResponder day! It's weird, and I don't want to torment you, but having spent the day sitting in a room with the great team at Dancing Ledge Productions and Martin reading first episode of season 2, well, all I can say is I think you're in for a treat..."

The show's first series was critically acclaimed, with reviewers wowed by Sherlock star Freeman's performance - and Merseysiders impressed with his take on a Liverpool accent. The Guardian said: "The Responder is as fast and riveting as a thriller and as harrowing as a documentary. It says profound things about the toll frontline jobs can take on our compassion and our morals."

The Telegraph said it blows cop show cliches "out of the Mersey", and that the Sherlock, The Office and The Hobbit actor "gives a tour-de-force turn".

The second series was confirmed last March after strong ratings but no air date has yet been revealed.
