Capcom launched the Resident Evil 4 remake demo after March’s Capcom Spotlight, and there’s a grueling surprise lurking inside. The Chainsaw Demo has a secret Chainsaw Mode that cranks up the survival horror demo’s difficulty by a substantial degree.
The demo sees Leon make his way through a Ganado village, fending off hoards of parasite-infested villagers with murder in their hearts. The sequence is notoriously difficult even in the 2005 game, not least because Dr Salvador, the chainsaw-wielding man, makes a scripted appearance near the segment’s end and tries his hardest to separate Leon’s head and body.
If dealing with a more punishing version of that sequence wasn’t enough, Capcom even threw in a second chainsaw man as well. This isn’t Super Salvador of Resident Evil Mercenaries fame either, the giant man with a double-bladed saw. This one seems brand-new. His chainsaw has a bronze blade, and he’s wearing a white sack stained with blood and ash.
The hardest part about the Chainsaw Mode difficulty seems to be actually unlocking it. Capcom made it where the mode only shows up at random when you launch the demo.
For now, Chainsaw difficulty is locked to the demo, so don’t expect it in the full game when it launches on March 24, 2023.
