Taking a leisurely stroll around a lake or reservoir is a great way to relax and clear your mind. Surrounding yourself with nature can boost your mood, especially on a sunny day.
You don’t have to travel far to find a tranquil spot in Greater Manchester though; we have more than our fair share of reservoirs on our doorstep. It’s not quite the Lake District - we’ll admit that - but there’s plenty of stunning spots to visit closer to home.
Just north of Bolton are several reservoirs nestled in the Lancashire landscape. One of the largest of these is Wayoh, located by the village of Edgeworth. Surrounded by towering trees with rolling moorland peaking through the background, it’s overlooked by the impressive Entwistle (also known as Armsgrove) viaduct.

The reservoir was completed in 1876 to supply water to Bolton. It’s linked to Turton and Entwistle Reservoir and you can follow a route around them both. To the south lies Jumbles Country Park.
Entwistle viaduct actually predates the reservoir, it was built between 1847 and 1848 to cross the Bradshaw Brook. With nine grand arches it’s a popular location for photographers.
With beautiful views across the water and pretty stretches of woodland, a walk around Wayoh Reservoir offers a bit of everything. The circular route is around three miles long and it’s mainly flat, so ideal for all the family.
There’s a few pubs along the way - Strawberry Duck and the Black Bull Inn - perfect for grabbing a refreshing drink during your walk. The path does get muddy after wet weather so make sure you’ve got appropriate footwear.
You can easily reach Wayoh from the Entwistle Reservoir car parks, or you can begin your walk from Entwistle train station, which has a direct service to Manchester Victoria.
