The 'real glimpses' giving Jamie Paterson food for thought as Swansea City transfer issue becomes clear

A penny for your thoughts, Jamie Paterson.

The attacker has missed Swansea City's last two matches due to a contract dispute with the club's owners. And he will no doubt have plenty to ponder having watched Hannes Wolf's exciting 45-minute display against Preston North End from the comfort of his own home.

The Austrian showed flashes of what he could be capable of high up the pitch while his work rate defensively was massively encouraging.

"I thought he was excellent. He showed real glimpses," said Russell Martin when asked about the display of Swansea's latest signing.

"It's going to take a while to get up to speed with the Championship. He showed moments of real quality.

"Out of possession he did a really important job for us and he's going to get better and better with games and conditioning."

Paterson is not expected to be involved in Swansea's matches at Queens Park Rangers and Hull City, but if he fails to secure a move away from south Wales, it is hoped that he can be re-integrated into the first team after transfer deadline day.

Despite boasting an output of eight goals and four assists in 22 Swans appearances, Paterson will no doubt hold concerns over his place in the squad should he remain a Swansea player after January 31.

As Martin says, Wolf will only improve in the coming weeks as he regains full match sharpness.

The introduction of the 22-year-old at half-time played a significant part in Swansea's second-half improvement against Ryan Lowe's outfit.

The hosts carved out some inviting openings with the Borussia Mönchengladbach loanee on the field of play, although the form of Joel Piroe - and one substitution in particular - fully highlighted a significant concern.

Swansea have allowed Liam Cullen and Morgan Whittaker to join Lincoln City on loan this month having recalled Kyle Joseph from his spell at Cheltenham Town.

Joseph was summoned from the bench with 16 minutes left on the clock against Preston, with Piroe - who has not been at his clinical best in 2022 so far - being the man to make way.

It was telling that Martin opted against giving Michael Obafemi game-time against the Lilywhites.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, the head coach also paid tribute to Joseph's attitude - a trait that has previously been a concern regarding Obafemi, as highlighted in the Bournemouth game.

And it's become abundantly clear that the burden needs to be eased on Piroe - who has 13 goals to his name in all competitions this season.

"I think Joel needs a hand. He's responsible for a lot of our goals. He had a couple of chances last week [at Huddersfield Town] and half chances today. He has one that's just offside," said Martin.

"Joel is a big threat for us, but we have a lot of games coming up. We need to make sure we've got enough in our armoury to give us a threat to other teams but to help the team have energy, have options to go two up top and to change formations. It's probably an area we'll look at.

"Kyle has been brilliant. Kyle's incredibly flexible, he can play anywhere in the front positions.

"He deserved to get on today. His attitude, the way he conducts himself. He came on last week and did a brilliant job at wing-back and today came on and did a good job at centre-forward.

"He's the first to admit he has a lot to learn. We have a lot of young players that need to improve and learn, but they're all willing to do it which is the most beautiful thing for us as a group of young men, they're brilliant, I can't speak highly enough of them."

To put it simply, Swansea badly need more recruits. The clock is ticking.
