The Rangers line up when Allan McGregor made his debut as keeper marks 20 year milestone

Allan McGregor will walk out to a wall of noise at Ibrox as a battle-hardened veteran when Rangers take on the mighty Borussia Dortmund.

And the white-hot atmosphere and Europa League stage against the German giants will be a world away from when his debut 20 years ago to the very day.

McGregor is in his second spell with the Light Blues where he came through the youth ranks to establish himself as the number one goalkeeper.

February 24, 2022 is set to be a big night for the 40-year-old as the Scottish Premiership champions look to finish off the job they started with a 4-2 win in the Westfalenstadion last week.

It was the same two decades ago when he made his Rangers top team bow under Alex McLeish.

The surroundings though, was far more modest as he came off the bench at Station Park for the last 17 minutes of a 6-0 Scottish Cup rout against Forfar Athletic.

McGregor replaced Stefan Klos, ironically a Champions League-winning legend at Dortmund, with Gers safely in the hat for the next round and a crucial UEFA Cup second leg tie against Feyenoord a few days later.

It was the start of an incredible journey at Ibrox which saw him fight for his first place with loan spells at Dunfermline and St Johnstone, leave following administration when he joined Besiktas before returning and playing his part in the historic success of last season.

McGregor’s 2021 title gong made it eleven major honours at Ibrox and he will be desperate to add to that this season.

Here, Record Sport Online looks back at the line up in that rout of the Loons where it all started for the 40-year-old shot-stopper.

Stefan Klos

A huge influence on McGregor. The German made way for McGregor late in the 6-0 win in August. Spent nine years at Ibrox after joining from Dortmund.

Fernando Ricksen

Dutchman was voted joint Player of the Year in Scotland along with John Hartson in 2005. A close friend of McGregor who was a big supporter of his charity for MND which he died from three years ago.

Lorenzo Amoruso

Former club captain spent six years at Ibrox after joining from Fiorentina and won nine major honours.

Tony Vidmar

Signed by Walter Smith from NAC Breda and became a utility man during his time in Glasgow.

Arthur Numan

Vastly experienced Dutchman signed in Dick Advocaat’s first season and won 10 major trophies.

Barry Ferguson

Ex-skipper remains a close friend of McGregor’s after forming a bond with him as two players who came through the ranks.

Neil McCann

Former winger is now a regular pundit on Rangers TV and has frequently showed McGregor with praise.

Stephen Hughes

The midfielder came through the ranks at Ibrox alongside Allan McGregor and the duo were close friends.

Andrei Kanchelskis

The Russian was on the scoresheet in that hammering of Forfar with the fourth goal but didn’t live up to his big money reputation.

Shota Arveladze

Georgian netted a double at Station Park in that Scottish Cup stroll and picked up five trophies at Rangers.

Billy Dodds

Former Scotland striker and now manager of Inverness Caley Thistle, the frontman netted a treble against Forfar.
