Her Majesty the Queen’s fashion sense was undeniably one of of the greatest of her time.
Featured for more than 70 years in the public eye, her clothes always made headlines, and she was well known for her colourful attire. Throughout her rule, she inspired as both the head of state and also as an ever evolving fashion icon.
In his 2011 biography titled Our Queen, royal biographer Robert Hardman revealed the reason behind Her Majesty’s eye-catching sartorial choices. He wrote that the Queen once said: “I can never wear beige, because nobody will know who I am.”

1945: Her Word War Two uniform
The Queen proudly wore a Junior Commander uniform during her World War II service in the ATS inspecting The Motor Transport Training Centre at Camberley, Surrey.
November, 1947: The Royal Wedding
Her wedding gown, designed by Norman Hartnell when marrying Prince Philip in 1947 was a gown made from ivory silk, duchesse satin, crystals, 10,000 seed pearls and a 15ft train.
January, 1953: Coronation Day
Her coronation gown, designed by Norman Hartnell, was embellished with national symbols of the United Kingdom and the other countries of which she had become queen. The embroidered design included bugle beads, diamantés and pearls.
June, 1961: Meeting President John F. Kennedy
Her majesty chose a full-skirted blue gown to meet President John F. Kennedy and first lady Jackie during their 1961 visit to Buckingham Palace.
February, 1977: The Silver Jubilee
The 1976 Silver Jubilee gave her an opportunity to break out a gorgeous white-and-gold frock along with her royal cape and crown
March, 1983: California Concert
The gown she wore when accompanying First Lady Nancy Reagan to a Star’s Concert in California featured the state’s flower of orange poppies embroidered on the top and a flowing white skirt at the base.
November, 2006: State Opening of Parliament
Her Majesty dressed in white fur and jewels from the royal vault as she attended the State Opening of Parliament.
April, 2011:The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's Wedding
For the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, now known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, the Queen chose a bright yellow coat, with a matching dress and hat.
June, 2016: Birthday Celebrations
The Queen's love of bright colour was well-known, and reached its peak in 2016 when she wore a very bright neon green coat-dress and matching hat by Stewart Parvin for a special Trooping The Colour to celebrate her 90th birthday.
June, 2022: The Platinum Jubilee
The Queen wore a stunning blue coat for her Platinum Jubilee balcony appearance. Accenting the outfit was white floral embroidery at the waist and a diamond Cartier brooch.
