The price of our shop is soaring at Morrisons, here's how costs compare with Asda

You'd have to have your head in the sand to not know that supermarket prices have been soaring of late. The rising costs of groceries, along with other household bills, has left many families struggling to make ends meet.

Last week our weekly comparison of shopping basics like bread and milk showed that there's one supermarket where prices seem to be rising quicker and higher than most - and that's Morrisons.

We reported how six weeks ago the supermarket was actually the cheapest out of the six main supermarkets, but is now the most expensive.

Its bill for eight common items - a two-pint bottle of milk, a loaf of bread, coffee, teabags, butter, beans, chicken breasts and mince - was £9.78 at the end of May, but had last week climbed to £11.15 - that's a 14% increase.

That's why we decided to put the supermarket to the test against one of its main rivals, Asda, to see how they compare on price.

And the result was actually quite shocking. Out of a total of 26 items from each store, 20 were more expensive at Morrisons, four were the same at both and two were dearer at Asda.

We're not just talking a few pence either. One item, a five-pack of Cadbury Caramel Cake Bars cost £1 at Asda, while at Morrisons, they're £2.25. A pack of four Heinz Beanz is £2.89 at Asda, while at Morrisons it's £3.49.

On other items there's a difference of 50 pence or more - like the 400g packs of smoked ham, 270g packs of breaded chicken goujons, and Nutella spread. Overall, the bill at Morrisons came to £49.15, compared with Asda's £42.24 - that's a difference of £6.91, or 16%.

To make sure we were comparing like-for-like, we looked at their own brand products and well known brands, like Heinz and Warburtons, rather than their budget ranges. But there are cheaper options available from Morrisons' Savers and Asda's Just Essentials.

Some offer prices would have brought Morrisons' bill down if we'd taken advantage of them, like two packs of grapes for £3.50, or two packs of pasta for £1.50, but it wouldn't have made that much difference to the end result.

And even though some of its items were on offer - like the 80-pack of Tetley teabags reduced from £2.65 to £2 - Asda's standard price still worked out cheaper at £1.90.
