Stunning Skenfrith is a small riverside village in Monmouthshire, ideal for nature lovers who are not looking for rows and rows of shops to while away the day in.
It is home to Skenfrith Castle - the remains of an early 13th-century castle now managed by the National Trust.
There is plenty of space for picnics on a sunny day or a paddle in the shallows of the River Monnow next to the ruins.
It is six miles north west of Monmouth, 12 miles north east of Abergavenny and just over an hour's drive from Bristol if the traffic is kind.
One recent visitor enthused on Google Reviews: "An huge sprawling castle ruin with impressive outer walls. Go through the smaller gate to a tranquil spot by the river.
"It is set in a picturesque little village and the church is also worth a visit."
As well as St Bridget's Church, which has an unusual clock tower with wooden details, the village is known for being home to The Bell.
The acclaimed pub and restaurant also operates as a hotel and wedding venue, and boasts a slew of awards including 'best pub to eat at' in the Wales National Tourism Awards.
Despite being a former 17th century coaching inn, its interior is fresh and modern with a cosy fire in the winter and pretty garden terrace in the warmer months.
A Telegraph reviewer raved that they "don't make country pubs like this anymore" and hailed it a "wonderful escape for food and dog lovers".
The pub's website helpfully lists six suggestions for circular walks starting and ending in its car park, each said to " take in some of the most beautiful Monmouthshire countryside".
