The Porthcawl Elvis Festival has been named as one of the 40 best things to do in the world

Wales is home to loads of brilliant events and one of them has been named as one of the most exciting things to do in the world in 2020.

The , which takes place each year in Porthcawl, should be on everyone's must-visit events list, according to Time Out.

It's Europe's largest gathering of Elvis fans and attracts thousands of people from all over the world.

Time Out, which listed the event at number 40, described the festival as an "eccentric weekend bash that regularly attracts over 35,000 people to the brilliantly tacky seaside town of Porthcawl in Wales".

Every September thousands of Elvis fans descend on the Welsh seaside town of Porthcawl for a unique celebration of The King. The feature events take place over a specific weekend each year, in the magnificent Grand Pavilion (Jonathan Meyers)

They add that it probably wouldn't work anywhere else - apart from "unpretentious Porthcawl".

Asking local experts for unique experiences you just couldn’t have elsewhere, Time Out's round up was compiled by the publication's local editors and contributors.

Organiser and founder, Peter Phillips, said he's very proud to be included on the list.

The 61-year-old, who launched the event in 2004 said: "I think we should be very proud of the Elvis Festival, it's become a Welsh institution.

"I'm lucky that I travel quite a bit and talking to people in bars in Las Vegas, New York, Sydney and you say Wales and people say 'do you know Porthcawl in Wales, they have a weird Elvis festival'.

"More Elvis fans come to Porthcawl at the end of September to celebrate Elvis than go to Memphis on the anniversary of his death - which used to be the big sort of pilgrimage for Elvis fans. We have 40,000 fans and a couple of years ago Memphis has 25,000.

"I think we can be very proud of this.

"It is bizarre, cool - in a very weird way - event."

This is why Time Out think visitors should go:

"Because this year, for the first time, the world’s greatest competition for Elvis tribute acts includes a ‘Best LGBT+ Elvis’ category.

"We’re hoping for some gender-busting takes that’ll tap into the international drag revival and turn the King into the Queen.

"You really don’t need to have a massive crush on the king of rock ’n’ roll to get a kick out of these two days of Elvis-mania: this festival is such an essential experience because it’s so unique.

"It probably wouldn’t work anywhere else apart from unpretentious Porthcawl, or without the support of the town’s unflappable, fun-loving population.

"For utterly silly, unaffected fun, book your heartbreak hotel, pack your blue suede shoes and let your guard down at this weird and wonderful Welsh weekend."
