The players most at risk of Russell Martin's Swansea City overhaul as signings already being targeted

Swansea City's squad will significantly change once again in the summer.

Speaking after the 4-0 loss to Sheffield United last weekend, Russell Martin admitted the playing personnel is likely to be altered in what will be his third transfer window at the club.

The captures of Joel Piroe, Flynn Downes and Michael Obafemi serve as proof of the model the Swans hope will ensure they have top talent on the pitch while boasting assets to balance the books if required.

So which players are most at risk? Some are more obvious than others.

Yan Dhanda is out of contract in the summer and will leave the club following four tough seasons in south Wales.

Ben Hamer also sees his contract expire following the conclusion of the current campaign and could well look to secure a short-term move to the London or Birmingham area given that January signing Andy Fisher has already made his way into the team.

Elsewhere, Kyle Naughton and Korey Smith have just months left to run on their deals, although it is hoped both will put pen to paper on fresh terms in the near future.

Having been something of a mainstay in the team during the earlier stages of Martin's tenure, Ryan Bennett's game-time has decreased since the turn of the year - with Ben Cabango among those to flourish during that period. The experienced defender is one of the club's better earners and is not short of potential suitors.

Given the changes to the goalkeeping picture changing last month, Steven Benda - currently on loan at Peterborough United - could well pursue a move away from the Swans given that he is likely to be behind Fisher in the pecking order in the short term at the very least.

Hannes Wolf will return to Borussia Mönchengladbach while others including Liam Walsh and Jay Fulton are among those who may be considering their options ahead of Martin's second season with the Swans.

There are of course two men who could leave and then return. January signing Cyrus Christie's contract with Fulham runs out in the summer, and head coach Martin has already discussed the possibility of recruiting the Republic of Ireland international on a permanent basis.

The Swans could also keep hold of Manchester City loanee Finley Burns for the duration of next season in similar fashion to what they did with Marc Guehi under Steve Cooper.

Big-name exits cannot be ruled out. Top scorer Piroe, Jamie Paterson, Downes and captain Matt Grimes are all likely to attract interest in some shape or form, and given the club's financial situation, there may well have to be a key talent sacrificed to ensure the club remains stable.

Beyond that, the upcoming summer looks to be pivotal for Jordon Garrick - currently at Plymouth Argyle - who is out of contract in 2023.

Depending on the financial situation and Martin's own hopes for certain players, other loan men including Liam Cullen, Brandon Cooper and Ollie Cooper could be squad players next season after loan spells away from the Swans.

But several signings are being targeted already.

The defence - or rather, the back five - is something of a priority.

It is hoped Nathanael Ogbeta can make an impact on the left over the final stages of the season having joined from Shrewsbury Town on deadline day last month.

Nevertheless, the Swans are expected to pursue an additional central defender suited to Martin's style - with MK Dons man Harry Darling among those admired by the club.

Wing-backs are also a concern, with Wolf departing and Christie's situation still in the balance.

Exits could also impact what further business is done, although the Swans remain intent on bolstering their attacking options.

Olivier Ntcham has just three goals and two assists to his name this season and has hit something of a slump of late while Paterson is still working his way back to full speed following a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to a contract dispute with the club's owners.

James McAtee was previously targeted and fits the bill when it comes to adding to the attacking options. Burns' progress in south Wales could well be a factor in any future pursuit of McAtee.

Given the lack of finances available, loans will play a part in recruitment, as has been the case for clubs including Huddersfield Town, Norwich City, Queens Park Rangers and Blackburn Rovers who are among those to successfully invest in a long-term plan of late.

But after what has been a season full of ups and downs already, it's clear to see Martin still feels his side needs to be adapted further as Swansea bid to make major improvements ahead of the 2022/23 season.

"I think so," responded Martin when asked if a summer overhaul is likely.

"We've changed a lot, I probably would have liked to have changed a bit more.

"We want to play a certain way and it requires a certain character and physical profile.

"We have some excellent players here, some who are unbelievably well suited to it, some who are not ideally suited to it, but that doesn't make them bad players.

"We have what we have until the end of the season, and I'm happy with that, the guys we have got."
