As world leaders gathered this week to discuss how to combat plastic pollution, all eyes are on the Philippines, where more than a third of global oceanic plastic waste is produced. Due to widespread poverty, Filipinos buy products in smaller quantities with single-use packaging, which results in plastic waste accumulating on the country's land and waterways. More than twenty years after enacting a landmark waste management law, the Philippines has failed to meet many of the targets set out in the 2001 legislation.
