The Oscars Nominations For 2025 Are Here And Oooh Boy That’s A Lot Of Snubs

It’s that time of year again, folks. It’s award season, the time when actors from all over the world (but mainly Hollywood) come together to award the thespians at the top of their game. However, for many, the pinnacle of achievement lies in the coveted Oscar Awards. Now, after significant delays from the Los Angeles fires, the 2025 Oscar Nominations are here — and while there are many talented actors who were expected to receive nominations, there are a whole heap of surprises, plus a bunch who were shamelessly snubbed. Let’s get into it.

Just for some context, it’s important to remember that the Oscars have a cap of five entrants per category (aside from best picture). That’s a pretty exclusive bunch to be in so even copping a nomination is pretty damn impressive.

Before we get into the surprises and snubs on the list this year, there are a few expected nominations that I am stoked to see. One of which is Jon M. Chu‘s musical masterpiece masterpiece Wicked, which landed noms for Best Picture, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress.

Bless them!! (Image: Wicked)

Plus, with Emilia Pérez also copping a nod for Best Picture (13 nominations all up! Woah!), it’s the first time that two musicals have landed in the category at once. A win for the theatre kids!!!

Other expected movies to hit the Best Picture list were Anora, Conclave, Dune: Part Two and The Substance, but there’s more below if you’d like ot read the full list.

All the snubs from the 2025 Oscar Nominations

Pour some milk out for our Aussie darling Nicole Kidman who did not land a nomination for her incredible performance in horny, tantalising thriller Babygirl.

In the shadow of the Australian Open, it feels like a tragedy that the horny tennis drama Challengers didn’t even get a nod at the Oscars. According to Vulture, it missed out on a nom for best Score, Original Screenplay and Original song with experts hypothesising that it was either too commercial or too edgy for the Academy’s taste.

They deserve an Oscar for this and this alone. (Image: Challengers)

Marianne Jean-Baptise‘s performance in Hard Truths saw her land lead actress honours by not one but three major critics groups. In the past, positive reviews from these groups led to Oscar nominations. However, this didn’t work out for Jean-Baptise despite her stellar performance.

Meanwhile, two films that received glowing praise from critics that didn’t receive Oscar recognition were the comedy-drama A Real Pain and the historical documentary-drama September 5.

If there’s one snub that really stands out, it was missing Margaret Qualley from the Supporting Actress category for The Substance. Although Demi Moore landed a nomination for Best Actress (much deserved, in my humble opinion), it appears that audiences respected the balance a little too much and left Qualley out of the equation. Bummer!!!

Where is her Oscar nomination? Huh?!!??! (Image: The Substance)

All the surprises from the 2025 Oscar Nominations

While there were plenty of snubs, there were also some very welcome surprises in the mix!

One of the biggest wins was for Walter Salles‘ drama I’m Still Here. The film stars Fernanda Torres as a mother looking into the disappearance of her husband whilst attempting to keep her family together. The film has been nominated for Best International Film and Torres landed a nod for Best Actress. Nice one!!!

Personally I was pretty surprised to see Sebastian Stan land a nomination for his portrayal of Donald Trump in The Apprentice. After all, haven’t we had enough of that big adult baby? But it seems like the presidency, along with Stan’s anti-Trump sentiment during the press tour has worked in his favour, landing him a nomination in the Best Actor category. His co-star, Jeremy Strong, also received a nomination for the film in the Best Supporting Actor category.

Donald Trump should be flattered that they cast such an attractive man to play him, tbh. (Image: The Apprentice)

Another (very welcome) surprise was Monica Barbara‘s nod in the Best Supporting Actress category for A Complete Unknown. She was totally nixed from the conversation ahead of the Golden Globes as Timothée Chalamet stole the spotlight for his portrayal of Bob Dylan. Now, she’s getting her flowers for playing Joan Baez and we love to see it.
