Somehow, two decades have passed since Mafia came out and shook up the action-adventure genre — and anyone can revisit it free of charge for a limited time.
As part of the 20th-anniversary festivities, publisher 2K is giving away Mafia on Steam. It’s the original PC version from Illusion Softworks, released on Aug. 29, 2022. You can download the game here. This offer (that you can’t refuse) only lasts until Sept. 5, 2022.
While not as popular as other crime-ridden titles like Grand Theft Auto, Mafia is unique in that it draws far more inspiration from classic 1930s gangster films like The Godfather. Gameplay-wise, Mafia might be long in the tooth and clunky, but trying it out can’t hurt when there’s no cost of entry.
Mafia: Definitive Edition, a complete remake of the original game, came out in 2021 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. While that version isn’t free, it’s for only $17.49 (65 percent off) on Steam. The entire franchise is seeing massive discounts currently, so it’s worth checking out 2K’s publisher page.
Studio Hangar 13 recently confirmed that another Mafia game is in the works. However, development is early, so we likely won’t see this one for many years.
