The One Show: Sam Ryder 'fell into a hedge' after first 12 points were announced at Eurovision

Sam Ryder has opened up about his incredible experience performing at the Eurovision Song Contest 2022. The TikTok star finished in second place during the grand finale on Saturday, May 14 with his entry Space Man.

The 32-year-old finished runner-up to Ukraine and gave the UK its best result in 20 years with 466 points. Appearing on BBC's The One Show Sam reflected on the experience and shared an anecdote that left the studio laughing.

He told Welsh presenter Alex Jones and Jermaine Jenas: "When the results starting coming in, before that we were already stoked, there was nothing that we needed more. We had got everything from the experience.

"We were completely fulfilled But when the first 12 points came in I fell into a hedge, I fell off my chair, just [fell.]"

Sam said that following the results he was feeling emotional and still trying to process it. Speaking to the hosts, he said: "Was it real? Did it happen? I'm going to watch it all back tonight and just enjoy it."

The singer also revealed that he plans to watch the whole show back, and described being at the venue during the event as 'like being at a church'. He added that it was 'everything Eurovision celebrates'.

Viewers were full of praise for Sam's The One Show appearance. @jcharlady said: "What a lovely chap! Loved this interview! Many congratulations, Sam, and good luck with whatever you do in the future."

While @itsdazzler added: "What’s a genuinely amazing man, so humble, grounded and polite. Never change Sam."
