Stars are continuing to pay tribute to TV star and comedian Paul O’Grady following his death aged 67. The tragic news was announced early on Wednesday, March 29.
One of the many posts celebrating Paul’s life came from The One Show presenter Alex Jones. Paul has made numerous appearances on the BBC magazine show over the years.
A heartfelt post from Alex read: “Paul, you were always one of my favourite guests on the One show, sharp as a tack, a great conversationalist and a spreader of joy to both humans and animals alike. Thanks for making us cry with laughter. Thoughts are with your friends and family xxx”
Alex is not the only Welsh star to pay tribute to Paul, who was best known for being the man behind Lily Savage. Carol Vorderman also shared her memories of him during an appearance on ITV’s This Morning.
Speaking to hosts Holly Willoughby and Joel Dommett about Paul’s life, Carol said: “He would always speak the truth. He was the most honest and the most sincere person that I’ve ever met in the showbiz industry.”
She added: “He raged against the light and he was an amazing fighter. I’ve got many amazing stories - We used to go out for lunch which would usually end up about 12 hours!”
Elsewhere, Welsh writer Russell T Davies shared his own tribute on social media. He captioned a photo of Paul: “The saddest news. What a star. What a lovely man. He was ferocious in the fight against AIDS; he made everyone love drag; he once asked me if he could be in Doctor Who, “I just want to wear a white coat and carry a clipboard and walk down a corridor saying ‘I think it’s alive, Doctor.’” When asked in 2021 if he despised anyone, he said, “Every single stinking member of this lying, self-serving government.” There will never be anyone like him.”
Paul’s death was confirmed by his partner Andre Portasio in a statement that declared he’d died “unexpectedly but peacefully” on Tuesday evening. For the latest TV and showbiz news sign up to our newsletter here.
