The One Show’s Alex Jones red-faced after accidentally calling Shaun Williamson ‘Barry’

Alex Jones suffered a hilarious slip-of-the-tongue on The One Show as she accidentally referred to actor Shaun Williamson by his EastEnders character’s name.

Williamson, 54, was being interviewed by Alex and her co-host Gethin Jones via videolink during Wednesday’s show.

Hilariously, the trio discussed Extras, which saw Williamson constantly referred to as ‘Barry’, shortly before Alex’s blunder.

Explaining why he wanted to work with Extras writers Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, he told the hosts the pair were “the two hottest writers on the planet” at that time.

Williamson added: “When they said, 'Do you want to be in Extras, but you'll be known as Barry, you'll be shining shoes, you'll be a comically unemployable version of yourself'... 'Yes, okay then!'"

As Alex attempted to end the chat, she then referred to the star by his famous character’s name before correcting herself and immediately trying to smooth things over.

Thankfully, the actor saw the funny side and the crew had a sneaky giggle as Alex insisted: “It was bound to happen!"

Williamson played the lovable but slightly hopeless Barry Evans for 10 years. He was killed off in 2004 when his scheming new wife Janine Butcher pushed him off a cliff.

The One Show has continued to air throughout the pandemic with segments featuring health advice being added to the programme.

The presenters have been social distancing with a skeleton crew working on the show in its London studio.
