The oldest and youngest players at Wimbledon 2023

Wimbledon 2023 kicked off on Monday with fans, but also players, of all ages coming to the famous grass courts in West London.

Mirra Andreeva is set to play her first match on Tuesday at the age of 16 - making her the youngest player in this year’s tournament for men or women.

Her appearance follows 43-year-old Venus Williams playing on Monday, the American having won the women’s title in 2007, the same year Andreeva was born.

Here are the oldest and youngest players taking part in Wimbledon 2023 as well as some other age-related records, quirks and statistics. Included are the able-bodied adult players in elite categories.

Oldest man in singles 2023 - Stan Wawrinka, 38

Stanislas Wawrinka, the popular Swiss player and long-time rival of Andy Murray, won his first-round match on Monday at the age of 38.

The world number 87 is a former champion of the Australian, French and US Opens, meaning he just needs to win Wimbledon to complete the set. Can he do it in 2023?

In doubles, 41-year-old Nicolas Mahut is ranked number 11 with his partner Lloyd Glasspool. Mahut is a veteran of the longest match ever at Wimbledon when, in 2010, he lost the fifth set 70 games to 68 against John Isner.

Isner, 38, also played his first-round singles match on Monday but lost.

Oldest ever male singles champion - Arthur Gore, 41

Gore was 41 when he won in 1909. He was also runner-up in 1912, when he was 44. In the modern era, Roger Federer was 35 when he defeated Marin Cilic to win the 2017 final.

Novak Djokovic is now 36 and won his first-round match on Monday. Who would bet against Novak going all the way and even surpassing Gore.

Oldest woman in singles 2023 - Venus Williams, 43

Aged 43, Venus Williams lost to Elina Svitolina in a tough first-round draw on Monday.

Williams has won the title five times and is one of the greatest ever in the women’s game.

Oldest ever female champion - Charlotte Cooper Sterry, 37

Charlotte Cooper Sterry won in 1908 at the age of 37, which is still a record to this day - although Serena Williams was 34 when she won her final title in 2016.

Martina Navratilova was 37 when she lost the final in 1994 but was still playing ten years later when she won her first-round match of the 2004 tournament. She also holds the record for the oldest doubles winner, having won the mixed tournament in 2003 aged 46.

Youngest man in singles 2023 - Arthur Fils, 19

There is a new generation of men’s players looking to win in SW19 with Holger Rune and Carlos Alcaraz both 20 and Jannik Sinner not far behind at 21.

But slightly younger still is 19-year-old Frenchman Arthur Fils who begins his campaign on Tuesday.

Youngest ever male champion - Boris Becker, 17

Boris Becker was only 17 years old when he won the 1985 title. He won two further times and was a popular figure but has not stayed on the straight and narrow in recent years.

Youngest woman in singles 2023 - Mirra Andreeva, 16

Mirra Andreeva has benefitted from Russians being allowed back into the main draw and will play her first-round match against Chinese opponent Wang Xiyu on Tuesday.

The 16-year-old will become the youngest to qualify for the main women’s draw since Coco Gauff in 2019, who was 15 when she beat… Venus Williams!

Youngest ever female champion - Martina Hingis, 16

Martina Hingis was a child sensation, winning the 1994 girls’ title aged just 13. The Swiss went on to win the women’s doubles championship in 1995 and then the singles in 1997 - aged 16.

A year later, Serena Williams was 16 when she won the 1998 mixed doubles tournament.
