The Office gets Australian spin-off with first ever female boss

Details have been confirmed for an Australian spin-off of classic comedy series The Office.

It comes 20 years after viewers were originally introduced to the bleak mockumentary world of The Office, created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant.

The original eight-part Australian series will premiere on streaming service Prime Video on October 18.

It marks the thirteenth global iteration of the series and for the first time, will feature a female lead in the role originally played by Gervais as the iconic David Brent.

Actress Felicity Ward is set to portray Aussie boss Hannah Howard.

The new series is set to premiere on Prime Video on October 18 (Prime Video)

An official synopsis reads: “Hannah Howard is the managing director of packaging company Fliney Craddick. When she gets news from Head Office that they will be shutting down her branch and making everyone work from home, she goes into survival mode, making promises she can’t keep in order to keep her “work family” together.

“The staff of Flinley Craddick indulge her and must endure Hannah’s outlandish plots as they work toward the impossible targets that have been set for them.”

The series will also feature an ensemble cast of Australian and New Zealand comedy talent, including Edith Poor, Steen Raskopolos, Shari Sebbens, Josh Thomson, Jonny Brugh and more.

According to a press release, “while many aspects of the workplace have changed since [the original series launched in 2005], especially post 2020, the physical office is a timeless precinct for comedy, and one that will never tire an audience as long as the characters are authentic, familiar, faced with relatable dilemmas, and, most importantly, entertaining and hilarious.”
