The numbers that debunk popular Manchester United theory on Jadon Sancho's favourite position

Just after the 20th minute on Saturday as Manchester United played Everton, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford swapped sides.

Ralf Rangnick had started Sancho down the right and Rashford down the left. Sancho was signed for £72.9m from Borussia Dortmund to play on the right wing, but his best performances for United since that switch have actually come down the opposite flank.

Sancho was anonymous when starting on the right on Saturday. He didn't benefit from Rangnick's tactical change at Goodison Park, it just compromised Rashford instead, and that display was his worst since the January winter break.

United have spent £120million on right-wingers across the last two seasons - Sancho, Amad and Facundo Pellistri - but Rashford, who has a preference to play on the left, and academy graduate Anthony Elanga have played in that position under Rangnick.

United's priority in the summer was to finally address that problem. Sancho was brought to the club to be the solution but he's just complicated the equation instead. Sancho didn't make a seamless transition to life in the Premier League and he was coaxed to improve by Rangnick by playing on the left side. It's ironic United's right-wing signing has found his home on the left.

It has been a problem position for the club for some time now and they seem no closer to addressing it despite the millions they've thrown toward it. United should have known Sancho wasn't solely a right-sided forward. He was versatile for Dortmund.

Sancho scored 20 goals from the left wing in 3,099 minutes and 24 goals from the right wing in 5,265 minutes at Dortmund. Anyone that has watched United this season will know that Sancho has produced his best performances when starting on the left, however, the data actually contradicts the visual impression the player consistently leaves behind, which is surprising.

The numbers suggest Sancho is actually a marginally better player on the right, which would debunk the popular theory shared on his favourite position. They also suggest Sancho should be comfortable reflecting those numbers if moving back to the right.

Sancho has averaged more successful dribbles and more attacking actions per 90 in the Premier League when playing on the right wing, compared to when he's played on the opposite side, albeit he has recorded fewer expected goals (xG) per 90 on the right.

There's not a large degree of difference when analysing Sancho on the left and right regarding his attacking output, but he ranks better on almost all defensive and passing metrics when playing in the position that is supposed to be his least favourite.

That's certainly worth noting and it goes against the understandably shared popular belief among almost every United supporter, although perhaps Sancho's high defensive work rate on the right-wing could be explained by his start to life at the club.

Sancho was struggling to contribute in attack from the right at the start of his United career and it's fair to speculate he might have looked to compensate for that with an increased defensive work rate, to help Diogo Dalot or Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

However, that wouldn't explain why Sancho ranks better on all passing statistics on the right-wing. The 22-year-old has averaged more successful passes, more successful long passes and more successful crosses per 90 on the right this term.

With Sancho's confidence now improved, the numbers show he should be able to permanently play on the right, as intended.
