The number of spiders hiding in your home right now as spider season arrives

You may have noticed recently that there are lots eight-legged friends around your house.

That is because it's officially spider season. So be prepared for a few creepy crawlies to find their way into your home.

Right now we are entering the peak of spider activity as they search for heat indoors. And you won't even see most of these spiders. In fact, a survey back in 2017 found that the average home has 61 siders living inside.

So why are so many spiders moving inside your home? Two reasons - the temperatures are dropping and it's mating season.

According to the weather website Weather & Radar Ireland, throughout the autumn months male house spiders are on the hunt for a mate. Female spiders tend to prefer a more sedentary lifestyle usually in warmer locations, so they will wait inside as the males come to find them.

No need to worry though. While we may not like the idea of spiders in our home, they are, mostly, harmless. There are around 600 species of spider found in the UK and Ireland, however only 12 have been known to bite humans.

None of the spiders are known to be poisonous, however the bites can be painful.

Spider season only lasts around two weeks. If you want to keep the amount of spiders coming into your home at bay, Weather & Radar Ireland suggest using a strong-smelling repellent like vinegar or peppermint near your windows.
