The NSW Cop Who Fatally Tasered A 95 Y.O. Grandmother Has Now Formally Been Fired

The NSW police officer who was found guilty of manslaughter after fatally tasering Clare Nowland in 2023 has now been fired from the police force.

On Wednesday, NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb confirmed that 34-year-old Kristian White had been fired a week after he was found guilty of manslaughter, resulting in the death of 95-year-old Clare Nowland.

“Today I have determined that I do not have confidence in the officer’s suitability to continue as a police officer, in line with the procedure mandated under the Police Act 1990 section 181D,” Webb shared in a statement.

“Accordingly, I have removed him from the NSW Police Force and he has been advised via his legal counsel.”

“I have spoken with the family of the 95-year-old victim involved in this matter and advised them of my decision.”

On November 27, a 12-person jury delivered its judgement against the Senior Constable, finding him guilty of manslaughter after he fatally tased Nowland in Cooma’s Yallambe Lodge.

In the early hours of May 17, 2023, White discharged his taser at Nowland — who presented mild symptoms of dementia — as she was walking towards him in a walker, holding a steak knife.

After the great-grandmother was hit by White’s taser, Nowland fell backwards, hitting her head.

Days after she was hit by the taser and fell, Nowland succumbed to an inoperable brain bleed in hospital.

Although Nowland was not formally diagnosed with dementia, geriatrician Susan Kurrler said she did present symptoms of moderate to moderately severe frontotemporal dementia, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

At the time of proceedings, White was not fired from the police force, but instead, the officer was suspended with pay. However, when the verdict was delivered, his pay was revoked, The Daily Telegraph reports.

Days after the verdict was delivered, Justice Ian Harrison continued the former Senior Constable’s bail, on the condition he remained on good behaviour, didn’t leave the country and/or approach Nowland’s family.

Following the decision to allow White’s bail, the Nowland family released a statement through their solicitor Sam Tierney.

“The Nowland family is disappointed that the court has today refused to place Kristian White into detention after the jury found him guilty of Clare’s manslaughter earlier this week,” the statement reads, per ABC News.

“The family is struggling to understand why the court felt it was appropriate to leave Mr White on bail and free in the Cooma community without any real restrictions in light of that conviction.”

Manslaughter carries a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison in the state of New South Wales.

White will return to court on February 7, 2025 for a sentencing hearing.
