When a story centres around a bloke who can’t feel pain, it’s bound to be jam-packed with blood, guts and glory. And unfortunately for the squeamish, the romantic-action flick Novocaine: No Pain is exactly that! But how do actors get over the gruesome factor of their stunts? Here’s what the cast had to say.
Hold up! This article contains spoilers for Novocaine: No Pain. You’ve been warned.
As a horror movie buff, I’ve definitely gotten used to seeing some gnarly visual effects on screen. However, there definitely were some moments where I had to hide behind my fingers to get through a scene. Think, something like Terrifier 3 or some of the traps from Saw.
But unlike these flicks — which are all horror — Novocaine: No Pain is a romantic-comedy flick that follows Nathan Caine (Jack Quaid), who lives with congenital insensitivity to pain with analgesia (CIPA), which means he’s unable to feel pain.
However, after a series of unfortunate events, Nathan utilises his “superpower” to rescue the girl of his dreams, Sherry (Amber Midthunder), from a bunch of bandits.
During his rescue attempt, Nathan endures a series of EXTREMELY painful injuries. This includes sticking his raw-ass hand in a heated deep fryer, stabbings from multiple objects, broken bones, broken fingers and more. So much more.

UGH, just trying to remember all of the stunts this man did in the name of love is making woozy (but also in a yearning mood, ‘cos I expect nothing less from my future boo if I get kidnapped).
But what makes the movie super memorable — as you can tell by my reaction trying to recall all of the injuries of Nathan Caine — is that the team behind the movie put in a shit tonne of effort into all the visual effects that make you recoil into your seat.
Speaking to PEDESTRIAN.TV, Jack and Amber revealed that they weren’t so squeamish doing the stunts. However, when it came to watching it back on screen, it was a different story.
“What’s really funny me, personally, [is] when I’m doing it, I wasn’t super squeamish just because I’d had a million fittings and tests for all the various prosthetics and injuries that were on my face and hands and body,” Jack shared.
“But then watching the movie… I was really squeamish and squirmish.”

Amber added that “it was gross” watching all the injuries unfold on screen. However, she admitted that she got “accustomed” to the gore during the filming process.
“As an audience member, it was a whole level different experience,” Amber continued.
The same sentiment was echoed by Jacob Batalon and Ray Nicholson, who co-star alongside Jack and Amber, who said they became “desensitised” to all that icky stuff!
“I think you just kind of see it every day, and you become desensitised. You’re kind of just like, ‘I guess we’re ripping a guy’s arm off today’. Really fun,” Jacob laughed.
“There’s a lot of weird things in the movie business where it’s like, ‘Yeah, man. You’re crazy,'” Ray added.
“That’s the fun of this job and just seeing what other kinds of art forms there are within this [moviemaking], it’s a blast.”

While Novocaine: No Pain is quite the wild ride with a bunch of gory moments, I would definitely say it’s worth the watch if you’re all about love and yearning, and all that smooshy BS we all dream of.
But beware, just because Nathan Caine can’t feel the pain, doesn’t mean you won’t feel it in your mind, body and SPIRIT like I did. Or maybe I’m just too soft. Regardless, a solid watch for you gore, romantic lovers, I guess?!
