T-shirt success

Peter Banton's Lives not Knives T-shirt has been worn by celebrities across the world (Nottingham Post/Marie Wilson.)

A local man who set up an independent clothing label has spoken about his pride at the rapper Drake's dad being pictured wearing one of his designs. Peter Banton, 35, created MoneyBaggs Clothing 10 years ago and features many different designs including T-shirts, hoodies and backpacks with the distinctive logo.

The brand started to gain even more attention with the release of its most recent design, the Lives not Knives T-shirt. The T-shirts have appeared on several celebrities including Dappy from N-Dubz and Drake's dad, Dennis Graham.

Peter said: "I designed the T-shirts because I live in an area where there is a lot of knife crime going off. I thought by doing the clothing, I could do a good deed and put something out there that could help get the message out. I felt because I was doing clothing, it would be a great idea to do T-shirts." He said he would give a portion of the sale from the T-shirts to Helping Kids Achieve which is an initiative run by Keiran Thompson in Nottingham. Read more here.

From hobby to publication

Author Jim Gibson, 31, has written a book inspired by his village (Joseph Raynor/ Nottingham Post)

An author from Newstead Village has released his first book of short stories that are influenced by the village he lives in. Jim Gibson wrote 'Bygones' as a hobby in the evening while he was working as a gardener and several of the stories were written during lockdown.

Jim said: "As we were putting it together, I noticed there were a lot of ties in the book. It seems the inspiration has come from where I'm living despite it being set in a fictional place. The stories take place in a village that looks like Newstead." The book features twenty-two different stories which aren't part of one particular genre but are tied together with a sense of the bizarre interspersed with real events.

Jim had a background in writing and publishing a magazine called Low Light as well as working as a gardener. The next step for Jim will be applying for funding in the hopes of buying time away from work to write. He added: "Hopefully the funding will allow me to buy some time away from work without having to worry about paying the bills which will be the next step." Read more here.
