Here is The Nottinghamian from Friday, November 11:

Hello,

It's nearly the weekend! Today's edition of the Nottinghamian brings news of a chip shop celebrating a national award and a famous visitor. We also take a look at some of Nottinghamshire's historic buildings at risk of being lost forever due to neglect, decay or inappropriate development.

If you're planning on getting your skates on at the city's Winter Wonderland this year check out the prices below. Plus a recommendation for a restaurant that has been given a new lease of life.

Chippy success

It's a difficult time for chippies with price hikes and rising energy bills. However, morale has been boosted at Oakdale Chippy which has recently won a prestigious national award. The Good Food Awards recognise culinary excellence within the field and are entirely based on merit.

For many it's the best chip shop in Nottingham, reflected in five star reviews constantly putting them in number one spot on TripAdvisor. Owners Mario Therabondos and his wife Jo Kara recently welcomed celebrity designer and TV personality Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen to the shop in Bakersfield.

The star was a filming a new TV series in the area, which will hit the screens next year. Find out the secret behind the chippy's success here.

Recommendation

Name: Masala Junction

Address: 301 Mansfield Road, Carrington NG5 2DA

Cuisine: Indian

It's incredibly sad to see a business go under in these tough times so it was good news when the owners of MemSaab stepped in to save Masala Junction and give it a new lease of life. The new owners are taking it step-by-step and haven't barged in making sweeping changes. So far they've given the walls a lick of paint, swapping magnolia for a warm shade of pink, and added a few tweaks to the existing menu.

The neighbourhood restaurant, located in a former NatWest bank, will retain its own identity rather than being turned into a second MemSaab. There's a cosy, intimate feel to the dining room and even though diners sit at tables with pristine white tablecloths and sparkling glassware, there's a very relaxed atmosphere.

Before the must-have poppadoms and pickles, curry fans are treated to an amuse bouche, an appetiser than looks like a mini green cocktail topped with a crisp puri shell. The menu has the obligatory samosas and bhajis for starters but it also offers something different such as scallops with a herb chutney and cauliflower pickle. Our absolute favourite is battakh tikka - the tandoor roasted duck is the most succulent and tender you'll ever eat. Main courses include Kashmiri Chicken Korma and Lamb Nihari but if you're a fish lover, the monkfish is our top tip.

Historic buildings at risk

Nottinghamshire's heritage is threatened, with nine buildings highlighted as being at risk by Historic England. The public body has put the sites on its 'Heritage at Risk' list for 2022.

Amongst those to appear on the yearly health check list of England's most valued historic places are Papplewick Pumping Station, Papplewick, and Woodborough Road Islamic Social Centre, Nottingham. The buildings are at risk of being lost forever as a result of neglect, decay or inappropriate development.

It's not all doom and gloom though. Three buildings have been removed from the 'at risk' list due to positive reasons. They include Church of St Peter in Gamston. Read the full story here.

Prices for festive skating

As reported this week, work on the new attraction at this year's festive Winter Wonderland is well underway. Sky Skate, an aerial skating path metres above the crowd, takes skaters around all four corners of Old Market Square and has a skate-through bar as well as the rink at ground level.

Entry to Winter Wonderland is free but skating is one of the activities that has a charge. Advance booking is recommended to beat the queues and get access at the desired time.

There's a range of options from super off peak at £11.95 for adults to the full VIP experience costing up to £90 for those who really want to get into the Christmas spirit. Skaters get 75 minutes on the ice. This month is the cheapest time to go, starting on the opening day of Winter Wonderland on Tuesday, November 15. Prices rise the closer it gets to Christmas.
