The Nottingham road so steep that snowy days make getting around 'dangerous'

Consecutive days of heavy snowfall has made getting out-and-about particularly challenging for Nottinghamshire residents, but it's a whole other story for those living in one of it's steepest streets. Residents in Kent Road, Mapperley, say that they find it difficult enough getting around as it is - and the "dangerous weather" certainly hasn't made it any easier.

Nottingham and Nottinghamshire has been battered by the snow in recent days, with travel disruptions, flight delays and crashes impacting the region. The Nottingham suburb is well known for it's steep roads, though some are hesitant to even leave their homes until the snow has cleared.

Those who have braved the conditions have also had a rough time of things this week. One man said that he attempted to leave for work in his car three times this morning (Friday, March 10) before eventually making it in, only to decide that it wasn't the best day to be working away from home.

Another resident said that she has slipped 'more than once' when attempting to will her way to the top of the street. Chris Jackson, 48, who works as a contract manager for a construction company, said: "There are so many roads that are tough to make it up in Mapperley. It's the most difficult place for it.

"I attempted to get my car out for work three times this morning. It was at quarter-past-six so it was when the weather was still coming down hard. I did make it to work in the end, but then back again because we realised it probably isn't the day to be out working.

"It's bad around here but it would be much better if people came out and gritted it. What can you do. It's a bus route around here as well - it's been tricky for the buses."

Janet Morphew, who is 74 and retired, said: "I find it makes the road very dangerous. I never mind living on a steep road at all. I'm always out for my morning walks. But I wouldn't leave the house now until it's gone.

"Last time this happened I fell and hurt my back quite badly. It's impossible to get up to the top of the road.

"No, it's too dangerous for me. I used to love the snow but - still do - but I'd break something if I went out in that."

Kevin Paye, a 58-year-old who works in recruitment, said: "It's a nightmare. I went to sleep last night and thought it might've settled down a bit.

"Nope. I've been shovelling snow off the car since this morning.

"I don't know what people without cars do. It's a nightmare in Mapperley.

"I haven't been out today but I've seen people slipping all over the place. It's so difficult to walk to the top of the road."

The roads in the area are also bus routes and residents have pointed out that buses have struggled to make it up the roads. The 39 bus, which makes it's journey onto Moore Road (the street next to Kent Road) was one of the many Nottingham City Transport (NCT) buses that was forced to divert yesterday (March 9).

Following the heavy snowfall, the Met Office issued a new yellow weather warning for tomorrow (Saturday, March 11), stating that ice patches are likely to cause "injuries." Schools up and down the county have also been forced to close today due to the conditions.

Now, the Met Office has put another yellow weather warning in place, writing that: "Ice is likely to be a hazard where snow has fallen overnight." Not everybody in Kent Road felt that the weather was the main thing to worry about, though.

Another resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, said: "I'll tell you what my main problem is - potholes. No one seems to be doing anything about it and it's a problem that's been going on and on.

"It doesn't matter to me if it's snowing or what, the potholes need looking at. I regularly walk up to the pub. I went up there yesterday and the snow didn't bother me."
