The Nick Walsh hand signal that casts doubt on VAR's Rangers handball narrative

Philippe Clement has suggested that VAR made a crucial error during today's Celtic vs Rangers clash over a potential penalty award.

The big talking point from the fixture came shortly before half-time when Rangers were denied a spot-kick after a handball in the area by Alistair Johnston.

Replays showed that the Canadian clearly handled the ball out of play, but it was later revealed that Gers attacker Abdallah Sima was offside in the build-up and that was later quoted as the reason for the penalty not being awarded.

Clement was furious with the call and he believes referee Nick Walsh made the wrong signal once the check was over.

He explained: “My biggest frustration is that when there’s a clear hand ball, why isn’t a penalty given?” the Rangers boss asked. “Because that’s a clear thing. I’m curious about that.

“The decision about the penalty needs to be more clear because that’s a clear handball.

“First, there was no communication towards me. Second, if that was the communication, I’m not a referee but I think there’s a clear [physical] signal for VAR and offside that everyone knows what happened.

“There was no communication about that, in that moment. I don’t believe that. Otherwise, the signal of the referee is not correct.

“There is a mistake. It’s clear for everybody.

“It is what it is, and I also make mistakes, but it’s an expensive one today.”

The original decision was a goal kick despite the ball hitting Johnston's hand and thereafter the VAR check took place on whether it was a penalty or not.

After the check took place Walsh then signalled for play to continue instead of signalling for offside and that has concerned Clement.

VAR ended up not intervening on the handball decision and therefore Walsh was correct to signal for play to continue with the goal kick.
