The teenager who dropped out of university to open his own burger restaurant

A new halal fast-food burger restaurant and delivery service is coming to Newport. Anas Miah, who is just 19 years old, has opened the restaurant to cater for all communities in Newport. Anas dropped out of university to pursue his passion for business and is using his mum's recipes to create the perfect burger.

The Burger House will open at 112 Lower Dock Street, Newport on Tuesday, March, 29 and customers can either dine-in, order by phone, or on JustEat. Anas has always had a love for business ever since he was a child. He said: “From a young age I was always interested in business, I used to sell sweets in school, not because I needed the money but because I saw the opportunity to do it.”

From selling sweets in the playground Anas was able to build up a business selling speakers, and after sixth form went to university as a backup option. Anas always knew that university was never really for him, he said: “After I left sixth form I was a bit on the fence about what to do so as a backup I went to university. I knew deep down I wasn’t a big fan of university."

With his speaker business taking off Anas decided to take the jump and leave university in December 2021 and in just three months has successfully set up The Burger House. He said: “My speaker business was taking off, doing quite well so I thought I think I am able to take the leap of leaving university. Ever since then I’ve just been building, building, building ready to open up this restaurant/takeaway.”

And he is loving it as he thrives off running his own business, Anas explained: “One week in doing my own business I had more fun doing that than I ever did in uni. I’ve always enjoyed business, I genuinely like doing it once you put all the work in and you see the results then it makes me very happy.”

Anas decided on a burger restaurant after having experience in the food industry, the love of his mum's recipes, and wanting to provide a fast halal burger service to Newport. He said: “The recipe itself is my mother's recipe and I always wanted to go into the food industry because I was working in restaurants and not to toot my own horn, I don’t want to big myself up but I was pretty good at my job and I thought you know what, I think I can do this.”

The Burger House is open to everyone, providing fast delivery but high-quality halal burgers across Newport. Anas, who grew up in the city, said: “Newport is where I grew up, Newport means everything to me, I grew up here, I went to school here.”

The family link is also very important, with Anas crediting his mum's cooking for the inspiration behind the restaurant. He said: “I’ve always loved my mum's food, anything she makes. Everything from the fries to the burgers is all my mum’s recipe. If it wasn’t for her food, I wouldn’t have said I can do that.”

The Burger House will be selling 15 different types of burgers, wraps, wings and fries, and drinks. The packaging is also eco-friendly as Anas has opted to use cardboard over polystyrene. The restaurant will be open from 4.30pm to 11pm Tuesday to Thursday and Sundays, and 4.30pm to 11.30pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and closed on Mondays. Anas is also joining the recently new refurbed and re-opened Newport Market on the Newport foodie scene.

Anas has high hopes for the restaurant, which he hopes the people of Newport will enjoy, and already aims to open more. He said: “We want customers to know that we are here to stay providing good quality food. They see what we are about and the quality we are serving and the service we provide, they enjoy the food and they can come back as much as they want.”

The Burger House opens on Tuesday, March, 29 at 112 Lower Dock Street, Newport. If you want more food and drink news you can sign up to our newsletter here.
