The Newcastle United transfer rumours that have gone quiet during the January transfer window

The Saudi takeover at St. James' Park saw the Magpies linked with international talents only a Football manager save could produce.

While it may be a few more years before the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland are seriously linked with a move to Tyneside, there were a number of transfer rumours that were seemingly more realistic.

Eddie Howe's side are still expected to be active approaching the transfer deadline and Diego Carlos is the latest name being linked with a move to St. James' Park.

The likes of Jesse Lingard, James Tarkowski and Aaron Ramsey remain potential transfers Newcastle could explore, but for the latter of the three, speculation has died down in recent weeks.

We've taken a look at some of the transfer rumours that have gone quiet since the window opened and the state of play.

Aaron Ramsey

Aaron Ramsey said 'goodbye' to his Juventus teammates a few days into the January transfer window, with manager Massimiliano Allegri claiming the midfielder had played his last game for the Old Lady.

The Welsh midfielder was linked with a move to St. James' Park, while Aston Villa are also one of the parties keeping an eye on the former Arsenal man.

Ramsey has found it tough to find regular game time in Turin, and is believed to be on the lookout for a Premier League return.

A move for the 31-year-old would be a smart move for Eddie Howe's side, but with the Magpies facing uncertainty over their Premier League status, doubt have been cast over the move.

Steven Gerrard's Villa have emerged one of the favourites in recent days.

Ousmane Dembele

Newcastle were surprisingly linked with Barcelona superstar Ousmane Dembele just weeks after the Saudi takeover was approved.

The French international is set for 'D-day contract talks' with Barcelona in the coming days with the 24-year-old available on a free transfer in the summer.

The Magpies are one of the only sides that would be able to realistically afford his wages, with Liverpool also interested in the winger.

However, Dembele was once one of the most expensive transfers in world football and a move to a side in the relegation zone seems unlikely.

If Howe is able to pull off a masterstroke and keep the Toon in the Premier League, they could explore the transfer in the summer.

Toni Kroos

A move from the Bernabeau to St. James' Park for the World Cup winner was always somewhat unrealistic.

Reports suggested a £30million offer would see Toni Kroos depart for Tyneside but as of yet, no offer has been made.

There were never really any further reports linking Kroos to Newcastle, but he was one of the names linked with Los Blancos departure as they attempt to clear the deck ahead of another rebuild.

Kylian Mbappe is one of the big names being touted for a move to Bernabeau and the 13 times Champions League winners are looking to reassert themselves as one of Europe's best.

Eden Hazard is one of those told they're free to leave and has reportedly turned down a move to the Magpies, despite Floretino Perez agreeing a fee with Newcastle.

Marcelo Brozovic

Inter Milan are still yet to announce a contract extension for Croatian midfielder Marcelo Brozovic.

However, speculation linking him to Tyneside has calmed down since reports first came to light back in November 2021.

The World Cup finalist had reportedly been offered a bumper contract by the Magpies, but speculation has died down.

The Magpies could theoretically hold talks with the Inter midfielder over a potential move to Tyneside in the summer, but he's widely expected to extend his stay at the San Siro.
